The George Zimmerman case in reverse.

Remember the “Spock’s Beard” episode of the original Star Trek (the episode was titled “Mirror, Mirror”), in which members of the crew ended up in a parallel universe where Mr. Spock had a beard?  That’s how I felt when I read about the Roderick Scott case.

Never heard of Roderick Scott?

Imagine a case where an adult man with a gun confronted an unarmed teenager acting suspiciously (and who had a history of drug use and evidence of marijuana in his system), shot him allegedly in self-defense, was prosecuted by a vindictive female district attorney, and then was acquitted of murder or manslaughter.  The George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin case?

Try again, only this time, reverse the races of the two parties.   Roderick Scott is a 42-year-old black man, and Christopher Cervini was a 17-year-old white kid.  Scott confronted Cervini and two of his friends breaking into cars in the neighborhood looking for stuff to steal (Scott’s story).  Cervini was a “beautiful, sweet child” according to his aunt.  “All he wanted to do was go home.” (the Cervini family story).    According to Scott, when he confronted the three, he stated that he had a gun and demanded that they remain there while the cops came.  Cervini (who was legally drunk at the time) lunged at Scott saying “I’ll get you.”  Scott shot him twice in self-defense.  A majority white jury acquitted the black man of felony manslaughter.

Roderick Scott held a pistol permit in New York State, which is no mean feat.  He clearly was someone that the hyper-restrictive state of New York found was competent to keep a firearm.  Nonetheless, he had to endure months of stress and worry that he would be jailed for protecting his own life in accordance with the law.  New York does not have a Stand Your Ground law and Scott was arrested immediately after the shooting and indicted by a grand jury.

Hey Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson: how about weighing in on this case?  The tables were turned, and the black man was (correctly) acquitted.  IT’S NOT ABOUT THE RACE.

Man threatens wife with murder.  Wife reports man to police.  Police arrest man at local motel in possession of firearm, and while booking him, discover that there is a court order of protection against him.  Police obtain copy of order and physically serve him with it while at the jail, ordering him not to contact his wife.  Man bonds out of jail at 1:27 PM and heads straight to wife’s house.  Wife calls 911 at 1:38, while husband is trying to break down the door to her house a mere eleven fucking minutes after getting out of jail.  Police take 4 minutes to arrive, during which time the wife has shot the man to death while he was in the house.

Does the Take-Back-The-Night™, Just-Say-No™, Grrl Power™, but usually anti-gun crowd begrudge this woman the ability to defend herself against her psycho husband?

As the saying goes, I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy to carry and the donut bill will bankrupt you.

This is truly da bomb.  The Kel-Tec KSG bullpup-style shotgun with dual magazine tubes, holding up to 17 (yes, count ’em, 17) shotgun shells.  You can switch to feed from either mag tube.  MSRP expected to be around $800 – very reasonable.

This is on my wish list, El.

What a perfect bookend to my recent pistol-packin’ granny post:

90 year old man shoots burglar after being shot in the face, then proceeds to fight the injured intruder.

Would you mess with this guy?  I wouldn’t.  He doesn’t look a day over 85.
