The George Zimmerman case in reverse.

Remember the “Spock’s Beard” episode of the original Star Trek (the episode was titled “Mirror, Mirror”), in which members of the crew ended up in a parallel universe where Mr. Spock had a beard?  That’s how I felt when I read about the Roderick Scott case.

Never heard of Roderick Scott?

Imagine a case where an adult man with a gun confronted an unarmed teenager acting suspiciously (and who had a history of drug use and evidence of marijuana in his system), shot him allegedly in self-defense, was prosecuted by a vindictive female district attorney, and then was acquitted of murder or manslaughter.  The George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin case?

Try again, only this time, reverse the races of the two parties.   Roderick Scott is a 42-year-old black man, and Christopher Cervini was a 17-year-old white kid.  Scott confronted Cervini and two of his friends breaking into cars in the neighborhood looking for stuff to steal (Scott’s story).  Cervini was a “beautiful, sweet child” according to his aunt.  “All he wanted to do was go home.” (the Cervini family story).    According to Scott, when he confronted the three, he stated that he had a gun and demanded that they remain there while the cops came.  Cervini (who was legally drunk at the time) lunged at Scott saying “I’ll get you.”  Scott shot him twice in self-defense.  A majority white jury acquitted the black man of felony manslaughter.

Roderick Scott held a pistol permit in New York State, which is no mean feat.  He clearly was someone that the hyper-restrictive state of New York found was competent to keep a firearm.  Nonetheless, he had to endure months of stress and worry that he would be jailed for protecting his own life in accordance with the law.  New York does not have a Stand Your Ground law and Scott was arrested immediately after the shooting and indicted by a grand jury.

Hey Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson: how about weighing in on this case?  The tables were turned, and the black man was (correctly) acquitted.  IT’S NOT ABOUT THE RACE.

Justice prevails. We still have a Rule of Law in this country.

Zimmerman verdict: Not Guilty.

Thank whatever gods you pray to that the jury did their duty and didn’t cave in to the pressure to “do the right thing” as defined by the race-baiters.  This case was never about race.  It was made into a racial conflict by those who profit from such conflict.

I have always been appalled at the “our side has to win for justice to be done” undercurrent in this case.   This wasn’t a sporting event; a man’s life was at stake.  As the evidence unfolded in real time for all to see, it became clear what many have suspected all along: that this was a political show trial.  An Obama-voting, half-Hispanic man was painted as a white, GOP racist who “assassinated” Trayvon Martin.  If George Zimmerman had gone by the name Jorge Zimmerman, nobody outside of his suburban community and the Seminole County police would even know who he was.  (Just as if O.J. Simpson had not been a sports star and celebrity, nobody would know or care about Orenthal the bus-driving murderer.)

We indeed have a justice system, not just a legal system.

For now.
