I can’t play guitar this well with two arms…

Only one hand doesn’t stop man from playing guitar

“There’s always a way to accomplish what you want to accomplish, it’s just a matter of how.” – Lefty Williams (what a great stage name for a one-armed blues guitarist)

Message: quit whining, man up, and be successful at whatever you choose to pursue.

In what I plan will become a continuing series here, The Gallery of the Intrepid will highlight individuals who have refused to quit in the face of daunting odds, great pain, or apparently insurmountable circumstances.  The definition of intrepid is “resolutely courageous or fearless.”  Often these individuals pursue their goals with a sense of self-sacrifice for something greater than themselves.

The first entry is Japanese gymnast Shun Fujimoto, the 1976 Olympian who suffered a serious knee injury (a broken kneecap) that occurred during the floor exercise.  He hid the injury for the remainder of the competition so as not to let his team down.  He competed on the pommel horse with the injury, scoring a 9.5.  He then competed in the rings.  During his double-twisting, double somersault dismount, his landing dislocated his broken kneecap and tore the ligaments, ending his competitive career.  His 9.7 score in the event was the best of his life.  His refusal to withdraw and his determination to continue the competition allowed the Japanese team to beat the Soviets by 4/10ths of a point, allowing them to capture their 5th consecutive men’s gymnastics all-around Olympic gold medal.

That is one tough and dedicated son-of-a bitch.
