Four years ago, I prepared a Tarot reading in advance of the 2008 election. My reading indicated that John McCain would eke out a win against Obama. In retrospect, that reading was contaminated with “expectation bias” and “wishcasting” that tainted the divination.
My reading for this election is much more sanguine. I trust that the results will be in the hands of the Gods; those of us on this plane have done what we can do, and I am OK with where we are.
Thus, here is the reading. It is a non-traditional spread; nine cards in three rows of three from left to right and top to bottom. The descriptions of the cards are from the Robin Wood Tarot, which is the deck I used. This is not my normal divination deck, but it is the one I had at hand. My query was a general one regarding the state of the election, not a request for revelation of a specific outcome. The analysis following is mine.
Three of Swords (reversed) – Sorrow, Loss, Emotional Pain
Two of Cups (reversed) – Loss of Balance, Love Becoming Hate & Misunderstanding
The Empress (reversed) – Lack of Satisfaction
Nine of Wands (reversed) – Obstacles, Problems
Eight of Wands – Swift Activity, Hope
Temperance – Moderate Lifestyle; Frugal Management of Means
Page of Cups (reversed) – Deception, An Unpleasant Surprise
The Emperor (reversed) – Weakness of Character, Megalomania
Nine of Pentacles – Accomplishment, Safety, Material Comfort
I generally try to read in an organic fashion, meaning that I try to find a divinatory conclusion that incorporates all elements of the cards presented.
The first row of cards symbolizes the sorrow, loss, and emotional pain that flowed from Obama’s unrequited promise to “rise above politics” and to unite Americans. For those who believed in the “hope and change” rhetoric, their love turned to hate and misunderstanding, even among his most avid supporters. This lead to a deep lack of satisfaction that mirrored what those of whose who didn’t vote for Obama felt.
The second row symbolizes the obstacles that are being addressed by swift action and hope (real hope!) flowing from a man who is truly a man of moderate lifestyle and frugal management of means (can you say Mormon, anyone?).
In the third row, the deception perpetuated on the American people (by Obama the cipher, aided by a compliant media) which was evidenced by a weakness of character and megalomania (“I won, Eric”; and giving softball interviews on entertainment shows) ultimately gives way to the safety and material comfort that Americans can create for themselves under the stewardship of a man of accomplishment who replaces a Potemkin man of smoke and mirrors.
I read this as confirming my growing feeling over the past few days that this election will result in Mitt Romney being elected as the 45th President of the United States, and that it will not be close. I last felt this way during the few days prior to Ronald Reagan’s victory over Jimmy Carter. Deja vu all over again, as Yogi Berra would say.
I shuffled the deck again with one specific query in mind: will Mitt Romney accrue more than 300 Electoral College votes? I drew one card, which was the Ace of Pentacles. This card carries the following meanings: pure contentment, attainment, prosperity, bright prospects. Answer: Yes, Mitt Romney will get more than 300 Electoral votes.
So, there it is, Dear Readers. Your Wiccapundit has put himself out on the line. Time will tell whether my reading was an accurate one.
