Can Democrats be this stupid? Of course they can.

Russian ships displayed at DNC tribute to vets

On the last night of the Democratic National Convention, a retired Navy four-star took the stage to pay tribute to veterans. Behind him, on a giant screen, the image of four hulking warships reinforced his patriotic message.

But there was a big mistake in the stirring backdrop: those are Russian warships.

Gee, I guess to the Democrat staffers in charge of A/V production, a ship is a ship is a ship.  What’s the diff?  Only the radars, the hulls, and the flags flying at their sterns.  Who cares?  They support the troops, doncha know.  Except when they don’t.

Lack of knowledge is power…kinda….except when we HAVE knowledge and ignore it anyway…or something like that. =P

This is far worse than most people would think. People tend to think that naval ships look very similar, and to a large degree that is true. I would not be able to tell a Danish ship from a Turkish ship nowadays, even having seen both and been taught ship recognition in the Royal Navy. At a distance I would even struggle with a British and a French or Greek ship as well.

This is hardly surprising, as most naval vessels are built with the same design philosophy, and converge on similar solutions.

However I would never mistake a Soviet/Russian ship for anything else. They all, even the carriers, have a very distinctive pyramid shape. I assume it is because they do have a different design philosophy, as they get the same shape as some wedding dresses with that design philosophy (pile on everything you possibly can fit to the superstructure and hope for the best).

To see those ships and not think “Soviet Union” or “Russia” means that the person knew nothing whatever, even in the slightest about military ships, beyond perhaps that they are grey.

By the way, how can you tell they’re Russian? Do they reek of vodka and borscht or something? 🙂

        Something like that 😀

If you are too far away for a scent, Soviet and post-Soviet Russian ships’ superstructures tend to be cluttered and to rise to a single high point, in a sort of pyramid fashion, often with a fairly crude-looking radar on top. Other nations’ post-WWII vessels tend to have more longitudinal superstructures, with less bolted on and often with two or three high points, except for non-Soviet carriers (obvious) and the US Ticonderoga-class cruisers which have a big, monolythic slab structure.

Interesting exposition on Soviet ship construction, Rich. It seems to me that this subject is not rocket science, given the number of people who have weighed in on it.

Reminds me of the scene in “Tora, Tora, Tora!” where the Japanese pilots are practicing recognition of American ship silhouettes, and one pilot mistakes his own flagship for an American ship.

Nonetheless, a professional operation has professionals handling ALL aspects of the production. That’s why movies hire people to flyspeck the footage for continuity errors.

It is my belief that some low-level staffer grabbed some stock “military” scenes and figured that was good enough. The DNC bigshots didn’t think it was important enough to spend money on having a pro look over it.

Most of the NDSWP were for the USSR so naturally they might think of it as their Navy.

Did you hear that the aircraft in the shot are the Türk Yıldızları (Turkish Stars, who use American-made F-5 aircraft)?

I should have guessed, having seem them on 9 September at the independence celebrations in Izmir. I knew they were F-5s or T38s in the picture, but since the Americans have displayed these I allowed them that one.

    • Wiccapundit says:

I might give them a pass on the mistake with the F-5s, as they are American-made after all. However, the only use the U.S. makes of them anymore (to my knowledge) is in the Agressor squadron at the Navy’s Topgun (not Top Gun, for pete’s sake) school. If the DNC had bothered to spend a few bucks on a military consultant, this would have been caught.
