Jimmy Carter’s enduring failure.

Monday, February 10th, 2014

How many of us remember a time when the United States did not have a Cabinet-level Department of Energy?  Does anyone remember why it was established?

In 1977, with 40.5 % of U.S. crude oil supplied from foreign sources, Jimmy Carter announced the creation of the DOE with the statement: “Beginning this moment, this nation will never use more foreign oil than we did in 1977 – never.”

As of 2014, nearly 37 years after its creation, with 16,000+ employees and an annual budget north of $30 billion, the DOE produces exactly nothing in the way of energy.   More than 61% of U.S. crude oil comes from foreign sources.   The DOE has been a complete and utter failure at the one thing it was created to do –  reduce our reliance on foreign crude oil.

And these are the people that want to be in control of the provision of your health care.

Thanks, Jimmy.

Gee, it’s like 1979 all over again

Let’s see:

Soaring gas prices?  Check.

Flaccid economy?  Check.

Government spending out of control?  Check.

Middle East tensions with assaults on our embassies and murder of ambassadors?  Check.

Impotent foreign policy strategy?  Check.

Fears of nuclear showdown?  Check.

Russian hegemony causing us grief?  Check.

Total loser ensconced in the White House?  Checkcheckcheckcheck.

Maybe I should get my plaid bell-bottoms out of storage and relive the glory days of old.  At least the music was better back then (disco notwithstanding).

Sadly, there is no Ronald Reagan waiting in the wings to put things right.

Hey lefties, you got some ‘splainin’ to do on Osama

The raghead is dead.  Good news.  Here’s my take on it.  Obama will try to use this to burnish his “toughness” credentials.  I don’t care.  The Islamic slug is gone; good riddance.

But I’m not letting the liberal screechers off the hook.  How does it feel to know that your boy, Teh One, just fulfilled George W. Bush’s longstanding promise to get Bin Laden “dead or alive.”  Didn’t Barry just act as W’s stand-in?  Oh, and wasn’t this a targeted “assassination” in violation of long-standing U.S. policy, as embodied in Presidential Executive Order 11905 signed by Gerald Ford, as strengthened by Executive Order 12036 signed by Jimmah Carter?  That original order states:  “No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination.”  How do you lefties square Obama’s actions with the law?  Did Obama violate U.S. law?

Personally, I don’t believe he did, because targeting an enemy in wartime is appropriate under customary international law.  I have never understood the squeamishness that holds that it is improper to send in a sniper to kill a lowlife like bin Laden, but it is acceptable to send in a Hellfire missile from a UAV to do the same job.  It’s hard to believe, but I applaud Obama’s actions in this regard.  I just want to hear the liberals’ explanation for why they are strikingly silent on Obama’s continued use of Predator drone strikes, renditions, military tribunals, and keeping Gitmo open.  Weren’t these things evidence that George W. Bush was guilty of war crimes?

Anyone who is critical of these things at all times at least is being consistent, and I can respect that position even though I disagree with it.  But the total absence of Code Pink since Obama’s inauguration merely shows what most conservatives already knew: opposition to the war in Irag and Afghanistan by most of the left was not a principled position against war or foreign interventionism.  It was simply opposition to George W. Bush.

The hypocrisy of the left is appalling, but completely predictable.

Some thoughts on government

It has occurred to me that there are four types of government administrations:

1. Moral and Competent

2. Corrupt and Competent

3. Moral and Incompetent

4. Corrupt and Incompetent

I would place the Reagan Administration in category 1: moral because it opposed communism and believed in increasing Americans’ personal and financial freedoms; and competent because it actually accomplished its goals of rolling back communismworldwide and vastly expanding economic activity through tax cuts.

I would place the Nixon Administration in category 2: corrupt because of Watergate and Nixon’s paranoia/enemies list; and competent because it actually brought an end to the the Vietnam War by forcing North Vietnam to the negotiating table on the strength of massive military strikes.

I would place the Carter Administration in category 3: moral (in a certain sense) because Carter – although preachy and self-righteous – seemed to genuinely desire the expansion of peace in the world, and was not overtly mired in any major scandals; and incompetent because, well, where do you start?  Iran hostages/growth of Muslim terrorism, Soviet expansionism, “stagflation,” sky-high interest rates, gas lines …

As for category 4, as the line goes from “Highlander”: “There can be only one.”

Corrupt.

Incompetent.
