Gallery of the Intrepid – Memorial Day

Monday, May 28th, 2012

– Wiccapundit

Veteran’s Day, celebrated in November, is the time for honoring all veterans who have served their country.  Memorial Day, however, is the day for honoring specifically those veterans who have died in the service of their country.

Here is one such veteran to remember:

Spc. Ross Andrew McGinnis, KIA December 4, 2006, Adhamiyah, Irag

From the Wikipedia entry on Specialist McGinnis:

In August 2006, aged 19, the regiment was deployed to eastern Baghdad and he was serving as a .50 caliber machine-gunner in a HMMWV during operations against insurgents in Adhamiyah. On December 4, while his platoon was on mounted patrol in Adhamiyah, a grenade was thrown into his vehicle. He told the other four men about it, so they could prepare for the blast. Instead of jumping out of the gunner’s hatch, he threw his back over the grenade, absorbing the bulk of the blast. He was killed instantly, but the other occupants were able to survive with only minor injuries.

It is this kind of sacrifice that we should remember, and honor, this Memorial Day.

Thank you to all veterans for their service, their courage, and their sacrifices, but particularly the sacrifices of those who gave their lives.

Hey lefties, you got some ‘splainin’ to do on Osama

The raghead is dead.  Good news.  Here’s my take on it.  Obama will try to use this to burnish his “toughness” credentials.  I don’t care.  The Islamic slug is gone; good riddance.

But I’m not letting the liberal screechers off the hook.  How does it feel to know that your boy, Teh One, just fulfilled George W. Bush’s longstanding promise to get Bin Laden “dead or alive.”  Didn’t Barry just act as W’s stand-in?  Oh, and wasn’t this a targeted “assassination” in violation of long-standing U.S. policy, as embodied in Presidential Executive Order 11905 signed by Gerald Ford, as strengthened by Executive Order 12036 signed by Jimmah Carter?  That original order states:  “No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination.”  How do you lefties square Obama’s actions with the law?  Did Obama violate U.S. law?

Personally, I don’t believe he did, because targeting an enemy in wartime is appropriate under customary international law.  I have never understood the squeamishness that holds that it is improper to send in a sniper to kill a lowlife like bin Laden, but it is acceptable to send in a Hellfire missile from a UAV to do the same job.  It’s hard to believe, but I applaud Obama’s actions in this regard.  I just want to hear the liberals’ explanation for why they are strikingly silent on Obama’s continued use of Predator drone strikes, renditions, military tribunals, and keeping Gitmo open.  Weren’t these things evidence that George W. Bush was guilty of war crimes?

Anyone who is critical of these things at all times at least is being consistent, and I can respect that position even though I disagree with it.  But the total absence of Code Pink since Obama’s inauguration merely shows what most conservatives already knew: opposition to the war in Irag and Afghanistan by most of the left was not a principled position against war or foreign interventionism.  It was simply opposition to George W. Bush.

The hypocrisy of the left is appalling, but completely predictable.

Once upon a time the Brits were badass. Oh. Some of them still are…

Pair a hardcore industrial-metal soundtrack (Dope’s “Die Motherfucker Die”) with video and still footage of British soldiers absolutely taking care of business, and the result is worthy of fixing up a batch of heavily buttered popcorn to sit and watch.  Yeah, the Brits had stones once.  At least a few of them still do.  Warning: NSFW.  Note the insurgents planting IEDs getting blown up at 0:47 and the  Gurkha wielding the kukri (traditional curved Gurkha blade) at 1:33.  I would not mess with these guys.  From Cmblake6’s Weblog.  If you go there, you’ll also find video of U.S. soldiers layin’ the punishment to the accompaniment of Drowning Pool’s “Let The Bodies Hit The Floor.”  Indeed.

Gallery of the Intrepid – The Real Deal

Friday, April 9th, 2010

– Wiccapundit

In recent installments of Gallery of the Intrepid, I have highlighted individuals who have overcome tremendous challenges to become successful, or to attain their dreams.  All the previous entries have been civilians, as I generally took it as granted that the men and women of our armed forces were all qualified as intrepid for their service to this country.  This, however, goes above and beyond:

Corporal Matthew Bradford has become the first blind double amputee to reenlist in the Marine Corps.

He has no legs and no eyesight, but Marine Cpl. Matthew Bradford has four more years of military service ahead of him after becoming the first blind double-amputee to re-enlist.

The rifleman was injured in January 2007 in Iraq when a roadside bomb exploded right under him, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

But after years at the Center for the Intrepid, a privately funded, cutting-edge rehabilitation center, Bradford, 23, has learned to walk with prosthetic limbs and navigate without his vision, and he only regrets that he can’t return to combat duty in Iraq, the paper reported.

Instead the Kentucky native will head to Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he will work with other wounded Marines in hopes of helping them cope with anger, depression and other issues.

“I’m paving the road for the rest of them who want to stay in but think they can’t,” he told the Express-News. “I’m ready to get back to work.”

Bravo, Corporal Bradford, Bravo.  America needs all the heroes like you she can find.

Please consider a donation to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Humpty Dumpty calls it like he sees it*

The AP reports that Operation Iraqi Freedom will be renamed.  Really.

The new name?  Operation New Hope Dawn.  Really.  (Thanks to commenter James S. for the correction.  🙂 Hope, Dawn, yadda yadda yadda.  D’oh!)

It appears that the secret to marketing (and liberal politics) is simply rebranding.  You simply can’t make up stuff like this.

A very funny take on this comes from Delta Bravo Sierra.

A more serious, thoughtful entry comes from David Bellavia.

Whatever you think of the war, your thoughts for the warriors should be solemn and respectful.

*`When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’  `The question is,’ said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.’  `The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master — that’s all.’ Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking-Glass.
