Hollywood has run out of original ideas.  Maybe someone should make a movie about Witold Pilecki. Ah, it’ll never happen.  His exploits are so immense, no producer in Tinseltown would touch it; they’d think it too improbable.

Improbable or not, they’re certainly true.  Rather than try to summarize, I suggest you follow this link to the article at This Ain’t Hell for the full story of a man with balls so large, they produced gravity.

Just mind-blowing.

Americans like to have everything easy, and we want it fast.  Go to any martial arts dojo (particularly the ones offering “after school programs”) and watch the parents come in to inquire about classes.  “How long will it take for my kid to get his black belt?”  Notice: not EARN a black belt; GET a black belt.  The proper answer from the dojo owner should be: “as long as is necessary.”  The actual answers usually are something along the lines of “___ # of classes” or “a minimum of ___ months.”  This is code for “your kid won’t be getting a REAL black belt, but you want him to have a Participant Award and we’ll suck the money out of you as long as we can, and when it looks like you’re about to pack it in, we’ll let the kid test for his black belt, even though it will be completely worthless and any real martial artist will know it.”

We don’t want challenges, we want results and we want them RIGHT NOW dammit!

We want to use the cheat code to get to the next video game level, because “I can’t seem to get past this level.”

We want to lose weight and get in shape by eating shite and watching Jane Fonda workout videos while sitting on the couch.

Do you want to know what a real workout looks like?  Try going to the gym, racking the plates on the bar, and doing your lifting – with Cerebral Palsy.

If you watch this and you are not inspired to get your ass in shape RIGHT NOW, you are a pussy.

Don’t be a pussy.

Gallery of the Intrepid: WTF? Edition

To thank everyone for sticking around to see if we still existed, I promised some actual, mmm, CONTENT.  This one sorta blew my mind:

Evelyn Glennie is a Scottish virtuosa percussionist.  Royal Academy of Music grad?  Check.  Grammy Award winner?  Check.  Regular extensive world tours with orchestras and collaborations with musicians ranging from Bjork to Bobby McFerrin?  Check.  Performed on Sesame Street and at the Olympic Games?  Check.   Deaf as a post?  Check.  Wait, what?

Hearing?  I don’t need no stinkin’ hearing to be a professional musician.

Glennie began to lose her hearing at age 8, and by age 12, was profoundly deaf.  You’d think that hearing would be the one thing necessary for a professional musician.  Nah, not so much.  She often performs barefoot, and feels the music through her whole body.

Here is an interesting TED talk where she plays and talks about how to really listen to music:

Moral of the story?  Don’t let anything stop you from doing what you want to do.   Deaf?  Be a musician.  Worked for Beethoven.

Gallery of the Intrepid: Colonial America Edition

This story from Bob Owens’ blog is a must-read.  When called to fight for their country during the Revolution, even those as young as 13 and as old as 78 answered.  The story of Samuel Whittemore is one that would not be believable if written by a Hollywood screenwriter.  It is true, however.  Just a sample:

The oldest man to fight that fateful day was an alarm-lister named Samuel Whittemore, a 78-year-old veteran of three American wars in the King’s service.

While Lord Percy’s relief column attempted to link up with Regular forces under attack by colonial militias, Whittemore set up behind a low stone wall near his home and attacked the 47th Regiment of Foot by himself.

Whitemore’s aimed fire did enough damage to the column that an assault was ordered upon his position.

Whittemore is documented to have killed one man from this assaulting force with his musket, then killed one and severely wounded another with horse pistols he’d removed from the body of French officer he’d dispatched decades before. Whittemore was in the act of drawing his ornate French Calvary sabre—again, taken from another French officer who “died suddenly” according to Whittemore, more than 20 years before—when half his face was shot away at point-blank range. Whittemore’s horrified relatives watched from a distance as the nearly 80-year old patriarch of their clan was bayoneted thirteen times by the Redcoats, and left for dead in a pool of his own blood.

When his kin came forward to collect his body, they found that despite having half his left cheek shot away, and pierced by 13 bayonet wounds, Samuel Whittemore was attempting to load his musket to fire again on the rapidly disappearing column of Regulars.

Not quite dead, yet.  “‘Tis but a scratch… ” said the Black Knight.

Yeah, he lived.  Another 18 years.  Tough son-of-a-bitch.  Do they still make Americans like that anymore?  We can only pray there are at least a few left with that kind of brass in them.

Gallery of the Intrepid – He can rebuild himself; he has the technology Edition.

Government health care?  I don’t need no stinkin’ government health care.  So what if I got my arms blown off?  I’ll just build myself my own bionic arms.

Yep, that’s what Sun Jifa of northern China did, after the accident that took both of his arms off (a blast-fishing accident with a homemade bomb that prematurely exploded – WTF!!).  He couldn’t afford the prosthetic limbs that the hospital offered, so he built his own.  How exactly does one do that?  Don’t you need arms to build arms?  Whatev.  No prob.  Oh, and he made them from scrap metal for practically nothing.

You keep using that word “disabled.”  I do not think it means what you think it means.

Oh, and President Obama?  He DID build that.  And, he’s building them for others, as well.

Any chance we could get him to emigrate here and serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services?

Gallery of the Intrepid – Twice as good with half the arms

I can’t play guitar this well with two arms…

Only one hand doesn’t stop man from playing guitar

“There’s always a way to accomplish what you want to accomplish, it’s just a matter of how.” – Lefty Williams (what a great stage name for a one-armed blues guitarist)

Message: quit whining, man up, and be successful at whatever you choose to pursue.

Gallery of the Intrepid – Man survives “locked-in syndrome”

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

When Richard Marsh had a stroke doctors wanted to switch off his life-support – but he could hear every word but could not tell them he was alive. Now 95% recovered, he recounts his story.

This is just an unbelievable story; one you must read.  He never gave up hope, and he literally came back from the brink of death, a death that might have been at the hands of his doctors pulling the plug.

In one study done in the U.K., it was determined that 43% of patients diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state were misdiagnosed, and another 33% were able to recover while the study was being done.

Makes you think twice about the Terry Schiavo case, doesn’t it?

Gallery of the Intrepid – Memorial Day

Monday, May 28th, 2012

– Wiccapundit

Veteran’s Day, celebrated in November, is the time for honoring all veterans who have served their country.  Memorial Day, however, is the day for honoring specifically those veterans who have died in the service of their country.

Here is one such veteran to remember:

Spc. Ross Andrew McGinnis, KIA December 4, 2006, Adhamiyah, Irag

From the Wikipedia entry on Specialist McGinnis:

In August 2006, aged 19, the regiment was deployed to eastern Baghdad and he was serving as a .50 caliber machine-gunner in a HMMWV during operations against insurgents in Adhamiyah. On December 4, while his platoon was on mounted patrol in Adhamiyah, a grenade was thrown into his vehicle. He told the other four men about it, so they could prepare for the blast. Instead of jumping out of the gunner’s hatch, he threw his back over the grenade, absorbing the bulk of the blast. He was killed instantly, but the other occupants were able to survive with only minor injuries.

It is this kind of sacrifice that we should remember, and honor, this Memorial Day.

Thank you to all veterans for their service, their courage, and their sacrifices, but particularly the sacrifices of those who gave their lives.

Gallery of the Intrepid – Never Give Up

I have a weakness for inspirational videos.  They remind me that I have no excuses.  This is a particularly good one.  It’s also a reminder that when experts say “you can’t”, tell them to get fooked.
